SPOTLIGHT: Michelle Moen

MICHELLE MOEN was a protégé of veteran Matthew Yuricich, washing his brushes on BLADE RUNNER (1982) before her official debut on GHOSTBUSTERS (1984). She developed a long career in the matte world, with her quick skill much admired by her contemporaries.

Moen would continue collaborating with Yuricich on ‘80s blockbusters like FRIGHT NIGHT (1985), MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE (1987) and MONSTER SQUAD (1987)

Quickly growing into her own, Moen contributed and supervised complex mattes for BATMAN RETURNS (1992) and a stunning, large-scale mountain for CLIFFHANGER (1993)

Moen would do mattes for many films, including the cartoonish mega-city for BABE: PIG IN THE CITY (1998)

Like many, Moen eventually made the transfer to digital matte paintings, which came after re-teaming with BLADE RUNNER (1982) director Ridley Scott for GLADIATOR (2000). In a way, Moen continued the sword-and-sandal epics (like BEN-HUR) that gave her mentor Yuricich his start.

Moen was also a key part of the DICK TRACY (1990) team, supervisor Harrison Ellenshaw greatly complimentary towards her work – even as she shifted from oils to acrylic paint. See Moen – and many other veteran matte artists – work on 35mm display in our screening of DICK TRACY on 19th November!
