One modern matte painter is SIMONE DE SALVATORE, who makes incredible digital art for films like THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL (2014). The Oscar-nominated Production Design projected Wes Anderson’s storybook approach to new heights with its flat pastel design.
De Salvatore has said he meticulously reconstructed the Hotel exterior from miniatures, carefully recreating it digitally before adding light and shadows. Even seemingly ordinary shots had painted backgrounds for a consistent vision.
Other digital backgrounds include De Salvatore’s work on SNOWPIERCER (2013), POMPEII (2014) and GAME OF THRONES (s7, 2017). In each realm, he is able to conjure seamless matte backgrounds to immerse viewers in each world.
De Salvatore is an excellent example of matte artistry evolving with new technology, bringing the keen essential skill for background design into the digital world. Check out his portfolio at https://www.simonedesalvatore.com/blank-q17v5 for more!
