Jena Holman worked as a Matte Painter from the mid-70s to the early-90s before her tragic early death. Here she is working (above) on David Allen’s passion project – posthumously released in 2023 – THE PRIMEVALS.
Holan seemingly specialised in apocalyptic landscapes, like this view of “New Chicago” in BUCK ROGERS IN THE 25th CENTURY (1979-1981) or her assistance on John Carpenter’s ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK (1981) alongside James Cameron.
Particularly impressive are Holman’s stratospheric paintings for THE RIGHT STUFF (1983) (left) and slightly closer views in FLIGHT OF THE NAVIGATOR (1985) (right). Although less known even within the world of matte painters, Holman was a gifted artist and well-liked woman who is gone too soon.
