A titan of the VFX industry was EMILIO RUIZ DEL RIO, the Spanish artist working on over 450 films across Europe and the USA. His collaborators range from Stanley Kubrick to David Lynch to Guillermo del Toro. Here (above) is Emilio posing with his painted airfield for DITY HEROES (1967).
Emilio worked on countless European co-productions, including tricks in LADY CHAPLIN (1966) and – pictured below – LEGION OF THE NILE (1960). He developed a technique for painting on wooden cutouts instead of glass to prevent unwanted reflections.
Some of Emilio’s more famous films include scenic art on SPARTACUS (1960), CONAN THE BARBARIAN (1981) and David Lynch’s DUNE (1984). He also worked with Ray Harryhausen for THE GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD (1974) (above right).
Emilio became famous for his mattes and miniatures, working on films as late as PAN’S LABYRINTH (2006) and – pictured below – a detailed skyline of NYC for SUNDAY LIGHT (2007). Credit to NZPete for their detailed archive and information!
