SPOTLIGHT: Caroleen Green

A veteran of Industrial Light and Magic, Caroleen ‘Jett’ Green added to several iconic films from the VFX company. Here she is (above) putting some finishing touches on a matte painting for WILLOW (1988).

Green also worked on iconic ‘80s films like INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM (1984), THE NEVERENDING STORY (1984) and LABYRINTH (1984). Her work exemplifies the old-fashioned fantasy which was revived through ILM’s 80s output.

Even lesser works like HOWARD THE DUCK (1984) or THE GOLDEN CHILD (1986) required a finesse and quality control by Green and others on the ILM team.

Green, as with many matte painters, eventually transitioned into Digital Matte Painting. Although hesitant at first, Green contributed to blockbusters like INDEPENDENCE DAY (1996), SLEEPY HOLLOW (1999), and THE PHANTOM MENACE (1999) before winding up in Dreamworks Animation.

Perhaps one of Green’s most unique collaborations was during Akira Kurosawa’s partnership with ILM for DREAMS (1990), with their VFX work especially evident when the paintings of Vincent Van Gogh (played by Martin Scorsese!) come to life as backgrounds
